Sparta is one of the first names that comes to mind when we think about the ancient world. And this is for good reason. After its founding sometime in the 10th century BCE, Sparta soon rose to be one of the most powerful city-states in not only the Greek but the entire ancient world.

Its unique government, which featured two kings and an elected senate, helped it achieve relative political stability early on in its history, and Spartan leaders were able to use this to expand their power and influence in the region surrounding Sparta as well as the rest of the Peloponnesian Peninsula.

Perhaps the most significant achievement in all of Spartan history, though, was their defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. This conflict, which lasted roughly 30 years, put the two greatest Greek city-states of the time, Athens and Sparta, up against one another, and the result, a Spartan victory, helped to reshape the entire ancient world. It ushered in a period of Spartan hegemony which was radically different than when the Athenians sat atop the Greek world.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, though, their time spent as the leaders of the Greek world would be short-lived. Alliances were made between recent and past enemies, and these coalitions were able to overwhelm the Spartans and force them to surrender. After this, Sparta would fall in prominence, but it would continue to be important when the Romans took control of most of the Mediterranean and western Asia.

Nevertheless, we should not take the fact that Sparta eventually fell from prominence as a sign that their time was not a great one. A unique appetite for collaboration helped to produce a truly unique form of government, and a keen understanding of what makes an army great helped Sparta grow from a collection of five small villages at the beginning of the last millennium BCE into a thriving Greek polis that would come to sit atop the entire Greek world.

"As I often have said the purpose of reading a book is to acquire new knowledge of a subject. Very good detailed study of the Spartans . I knew about their prowess as a military minded society . But, one thing that stuck out to me was having a two King system of rule kinda live having checks & balances so no one side becomes the stronger & the other weaker. So much information here in all of their wars & how they held on to their lands against the Persians .
Great job once again by Captivating History!"

  • This book is a great 30,000 foot view of Spartan history. I learned a lot about their society and conquests.
  • One of the interesting things about Sparta was that it developed from merging 4 different villages together during early Greek history. The book starts with Mycenaeans as the earliest proto- Grecian people in that area through to the period in the 300' s BCE when their power weakened. Interesting enough they were never conquered, not even by Alexander the Great. They are famous for their warrior culture and austere outlook but this book covers much more about Greek culture also. This is much different from other ancient empires at the time. This book explains much about that. Overall, it was an interesting glimpse into a world long gone and only admirable in some ways.
  • Ah, Sparta! One of my favorite subjects of Ancient History and this guide shows the way The Spartans were born, their rise to power & greatness, along with their eventual decline. Almost everyone knows something about the 300 Spartans that fought at Thermopylae and that story is included in this guide along with what led up to that battle with the Persians and what happened to the poleis (Greek city-states) afterwards. A knowledgeable writing that deserves a read!
  • Fascinating culture. Incredible amount of history on just 93 pages. It is well written and easy to read. If you want a little book that packs a lot of punch about Sparta, this is it. III explains how Sparta came to be, how it developed into the mighty military force it is known for today, their relationship with its allies and enemies. It is incredibly to know they survived so much war. I learned not only about Sparta but about the Greeks in general as well as the Persians. This is a great introduction to their culture.

  • A lot of unknown (at least to me) and interesting information on the building of the Spartan culture. Theres a lot more to the Greek countries than Mythology and modern movies like 300.
  • This is very well written and informative. There's so much information packed into 90-ish pages that you won't want to put it down. It also never bogs you down in numbers and dates. It simply tells the story of Sparta.
  • Who were the Spartans? How did they live, and how did they grow in power, defeat the mighty Persians along with the Athenians, and then compete with Athens for hegemony? What caused their decline? All of this is revealed in this succinct book that tells the whole story in a short read. Interesting and enjoyable without being cumbersome.
